Portmarnock 16 ball tour May 2012
And so, travel arrangements had been made and a rendezvous in the Portmarnock Hotel arranged for mid morning. John H managed the trip South without running out of diesel, no doubt aware that Wilfie would drive past him this time if he did !
First impressions were good , weather was fine and a relaxed contingent gathered on the first tee to play a course no one had experience of. Adrian discussed the intricacies of his latest driver shaft ( kick point/heal to toe weighting etc ), Alan Mc Arthur perfected that lazy back swing , JH puzzled how he would avoid the car pack 400 yards to the right of the tee with his first shot of the day , Noel was on the phone with Jan and Peter Robson had a concern that there weren’t many trees or flora to swipe his foot or club at in the unlikely event of an errant shot.
All got away successfully with the two big Bankers ( yes Bankers !!) Kevin and David playing together. Kevin played very well and it was noted during his round that he had a great chance of the visitors prize until it was pointed out that he was actually the President ! Arthur complained that the fairways should have been much narrower so that everybody would have to play out of the rough and not just him and “nudger” Lamont proposed a Seniors tee box 100 yards in front of the ladies which we conceded to although it was noted that he was thru the green at a short par 3 before hitting the ball.
A most pleasant course all in all with young Robson being the winner on the day with an excellent 39pts which resulted in his emotions being kept in check and minimal damage only to his clubs and bag during the round.
A pleasant if somewhat predictable final evening although it was positive to note that Adrian lasted beyond his starter, not falling asleep at the table until well through his main course .
Good weather again the next day and nothing major to report on the course other than the car park on the right had been cleared when the local clientele noted JH’s drive on the first day. When J H was walking to his car after his round a Policeman approached him and asked him if he had driven off the first tee about 4 hours ago. “yes” answered JH. Well said the policeman gravely, your golf ball flew onto the main road and hit a BMW which hit 6 other cars and a fire engine which was unable to reach a fire on time and the building burned down. Now, what do you intend to do about it ?? JH thought carefully and replied that he intended to close his stance a little, tighten his grip and move his right thumb a little to the left !
A fairly quite night and it would be entirely improper to use this forum for detailed Tour Talk , suffice to say that a new Brian Routledge was identified amongst our guest contingent with somewhat irregular hours being the norm over both nights !!
Acknowledgements to Wilfie for organising and ongoing thanks to Noel for his tireless work on the Saturday bookings.
